Once
in a while, an importer finds a small property in a well-known
wine producing region that offers a very high-quality product
for an incredibly reasonable price. This is one of these wines.
As most of its neighbors (Pomerol, Lalande de Pomerol and Saint
Emilion), Merlot dominantes the cépage at 70% with Cabernet
Franc (20%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) filling out the blend.
The wine is aged for one year in oak barrels in which 20% are
new each year.
Wine has been made from the vines on this 15 hectare property
for over three generations and many of the vines are over 45
years old. The property lies along the stream, La Barbanne,
which is the dividing line between Montagne St. Emilion and
Pomerol. Like Pomerol, the soil is a gravelly, calcerous clay
which well suits the growing conditions for Merlot and Cabernet
Franc.
Rich, deep berry and cassis flavors meld well with a structure
of soft tannins and fruit acid to produce a flavor that is very
satisfying. A right-bank wine that is showing well now and will
show better with time.
