Located in the commune of St. Etienne-de-Lisse, Château Mangot is situated
on outcroppings of limestone that are the same as on the hillsides and plateau
of the more famous cru classé wines, something only a few vignerons in
the commune are fortunate to have. Their 28-hectare vineyard is planted with
vines of an average age of 40 yrs and composed predominantly of Merlot with
both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to round out the blend. Low yields
and extraordinary care of the vines throughout the season contributes to a product
of the highest quality possible.
The Cuvée Todeschini is the creation, first done in the 2008 vintage,of Yann and Carl Todeschini, the two sons that are now part of the family business. As they put it, "..this cuvée is the fruit of their curiosity, and the desire to explore all the ways of getting the very best out of the potential of each grape variety and terroir: the result is a finely-tuned blend between 3 varieties and 4 plots of vines...".
The wine is produced with 40% Cabernet Franc, from vines growing on the iron and clay soils to which they are well-suited and brings out the complex, velvety and violet qualities; 30% Merlot, from 80m altitude hillside terraces and late-harvested to provide depth; 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, from old vines giving the blend sturcture, freshness with a hint of blackcurrant, as well as firm long-lasting tannins
To keep all the qualities of the fruit intact, the grapes are handled gently without pumping. "End to end vinification in barrels offers the possibility of working individually on the small batches of grapes used. By rotating the barrel, flavor and tannins are extracted gently form the grapes, and harmonizing with the wood tannins, and avoiding bitter tannins from the grape seeds. Following fermentation, the wines are racked by gravity, the solids are pressed for the wine within, and both added back to the same barrels, again by gravity, and allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation and then allowed to mature for 14 to 16 months before bottling.
This is an intense wine and somewhat atypical for St. Emilion due to its high percentage of the Cabernet grapes. It is deeply colored with rich aromas that almost burst out of the glass. The wine flavor is powerful without being aggressive thanks to the ripe and soft, yet structured tannins. This wine reflects all the complexity of the grape varieties, the qualities of the soil and the passion of the wine producers or vignerons. It combines the power of a Cabernet blend with the finesse provided by the delicate extraction of grapes from selected terroirs.
