Domaine Mathieu has been a family-run vineyard since the 16th Century, and farms about 50 acres in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation and about 10 acres in the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation. The vineyard property is divided into 58 parcels, sprinkled throughout Châteauneuf-du-Pape on the plateau. Today, André and Jérôme Mathieu manage the property and produce both red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as Côtes-du-Rhône.
Domaine Mathieu’s 10 acres in the Côtes-du-Rhône are mainly a limestone and clay soil, and is planted mainly to Grenache and Syrah. These are the grapes used in the Cuvée ChâteauMar. After harvest, the fermentation is carried out in temperature-regulated stainless steel vats with to keep the temperature low (~78°F) in order to preserve the freshness of the fruit.
The color is a brilliant ruby-red and aromas rich with the fragrance of small red berries such as strawberries and raspberries. These charming and pleasing aromas are followed by a suppleness and roundness in the mouth that is both fruity and spicy.. The finish is fresh and pleasing.
This wine pairs well with most grilled meats and poultry and affordable enough to be an everyday wine. Vegetable and meat dishes with some tomato also work well as this wine handles the higher acidity of tomatoes like a champ. Give it a little chill (68°F) for best enjoyment.
