Domaine Charles Baur
Grand Cru Pfersigberg Vendanges Tardives
Vin D’Alsace
Gewurztraminer
Wine at the Baur vineyards has been made by many generations of the Baur family. Armand Baur took over the property from his father who began selling the property’s own wine in bottles beginning in 1946. Today Armand Baur produces wine from 12 hectares (~30 acres) of vines of which 3 hectares are in the Grand Cru Eichberg and Pfersigberg. The property is located in the village of Eguisheim, which is just west of the city of Colmar, in the southern portion of Alsace, also called the Haut-Rhin or upper Rhine river valley. The terroir is composed mainly of clay and old limestone and marl which give the wines of Domain Baur a rich creaminess and depth of flavor as well as an interesting complexity in both the aromas and flavors. All the fruit is harvested by hand and vinified on the property. The vinification and maturation is done half in large ancient oak casks (foudres) and the balance in stainless steel. Each parcel on their property is vinified separately to allow the unique expression of each terroir. The fermentation is carefully temperature controlled to guarantee the optimal character and aromatic expression of each blend, or cuvée.

This Gewurztraminer comes from the Grand Cru vineyard Pfersigberg where Armand Baur produces some of his best wines. Thanks to a long growing season, this Vendanges Tardives wine was harvested in November.

It shows a richly fragrant nose of apricot, lychee and gooseberry that is complemented by the mineral complexity added from the unique terroir. The wine literally flows onto the palate with a full body and rich fruit that is well balanced with acidity that even supports the 44g/L residual sugar. The concentrated flavors are almost astonishing in their power and last to an extraordinary finish.

It pairs well with pâté or foie gras or strong cheeses, and will cellar for many years if kept well.
