The Solane family produces both red Bordeaux wines and sweet
late harvest white wines on the right bank of the Garonne
River in the region of St. Croix-du-Mont. The sweet white
Bordeaux wine is produced from a 20 hectare parcel (49 acres)
with soils dominated by limestone & clay with a primarily
southern exposure. The vines are on average 35 years old.
St. Croix-du-Mont is by definition a sweet wine appellation
and is situated just across the Garonne River from Sauternes
& Barsac. Lesser known, these wines represent better values
than their neighbors and some pearls can be found if you look
hard enough.
The St. Croix-du-Mont from the Solane family is produced in the heart of the
commune of the same name. This wine is made entirely from Semillon grapes and
is aged 24-36 months in stainless steel and old oak vats.
This is their primary production being about 5800 cases per
year. Using multiple and successive passes through the vineyard
during the harvest, only the grape clusters at premium ripeness
and botrytisized (affected by the "noble rot", Botrytis
cinerea) are picked. Typically 5-7 passes are necessary to
finish the harvest.
The wine shows a wonderful and brilliant golden hue. The aromas of dried peaches
and apricots blend well with citrus notes to offer an attractive and balanced
bouquet. With a good level of acidity, the wine shows a sweet but clean and
fresh fruit flavors and not cloyingly sweet like Sauternes can often be.
