Château Haut-Châtain
Châtain Lalande-De-Pomerol
Lalande-De-Pomerol - Cuvée Prestige
Lalande-De-Pomerol
Some of the best, and certainly the most expensive, examples of Merlot come from the appellation of Pomerol.  Fortunately for the savvy consumer, the surrounding appellation Lalande-de-Pomerol produces some excellent and quite affordable wines, which are also based on Merlot grown on the clay of the western edge of the St. Emilion plateau.  Château Haut-Châtain is an 11-hectare property in the commune of Néac on a soil of clay and gravel.  The vineyard is planted with vines of an average age of 25 years and harvest is entirely manual. The fermentation in cuve lasts for 3-4 weeks and is then aged in oak for 12 to 16 months, using 25 to 50% new barrels depending on the vintage and what the fruit can support.  Martine Rivière, the producer and a trained oenologue states, "The amount of new oak and the time of ageing depends on the vintage in respect to the fruit and the taste of the wine and to obtain a beautiful harmony between the wood and the wine.

Produced from Merlot (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Cabernet Franc (10%), the wine shows rich and engaging floral aromas with notes of cherry jam.  The fruit on the palate is rich and savory with notes of cocoa and savory flavors of plums and a classic touch of terroir, all balanced with ripe tannins and fruit acidity.

The Cuvée Prestige is Martine's premium wine made from only the best grapes and is only made in the best vintages. Aged in all new oak, the wine has rich nuances of vanilla that marry well with the intense and dark fruit and chocolate flavors. A truly extraordinary wine for all meats, poultry, game and richly flavored dishes
