 Jacques
Rodet makes this classic and flavorful example of the wines
of the northern region of the Bordeaux vineyards. His vines
are situated on the heights of the hills of the Côtes
de Bourg, only two miles from the Gironde River.
The vineyard is planted to classic Bordeaux grapes, 48% Merlot,
26% Cabernet Sauvignon 22% Cabernet Franc and 4% Malbec, but
the blend from vintage to vintage varies according to the quality
of the grapes from the various parcels. In Jacque’s own
words (translated from French), the Merlot brings roundness,
flesh and alcohol, the Cabernet Sauvignon brings framework and
complexity and the Cabernet Franc brings framework and finesse.
Aging in oak barrels for 12 - 14 months gives the wine an added
dimension of flavor.
This is Jacques Rodet’s second wine, which proves to be
an exceptional value in a good vintage such as 2000. Dominated
by Merlot in the blend with a lesser amount of Cabernet Franc
and Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine offers a rich fruit that falls
into perfect balance with the acidity and yet is soft with ripe
tannins so is quite approachable now.
