 One
of the most well known of the Bordeaux appellations is that
of Margaux. North of the actual town of Margaux, in the town
of Soussans, you will find the property of Château Tayac.
The vineyard is composed entirely of gravely soil and extends
for 37 hectares (~90 acres) on the best gravelly terrain of
the commune of Soussans and is planted only to the noble varieties
of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (2%)
and Petit Verdot (3%), and to a relatively high density of 100,000
vines per hectare. The wine is fermented in cuve for 21 days
and then aged in oak barriques (25% new) for 18 months before
release.
Château Tayac produces a classic Margaux with all the
qualities and characteristics of the appellation. The wine is
exceptionally well balanced with deep fruit flavors of berry
and cassis with a depth of black fruit coming more from the
Petit Verdot, which shows well in this wine. Nonetheless, this
wine is an excellent example of just how well Cabernet Sauvignon
does in the Margaux appellation.
The Portet family holds the philosophy that the wine should
be approachable upon release. They therefore hold back each
vintage for a few years before release to give the wine a chance
to mature in bottle. The pleasure for me is to be able to offer
an older vintage of a great wine in significant quantities for
the market.
