 Wine
at the Baur vineyards has been made by many generations of the
Baur family. Armand Baur took over the property from his father
who began selling the property’s own wine in bottles beginning
in 1946. Today Armand Baur produces wine from 12 hectares (~30
acres) of vines of which 3 hectares are in the Grand Cru Eichberg
and Pfersigberg. The property is located in the village of Eguisheim,
which is just west of the city of Colmar, in the southern portion
of Alsace, also called the Haut-Rhin or upper Rhine river valley.
The terroir is composed mainly of clay and old limestone and
marl which give the wines of Domain Baur a rich creaminess and
depth of flavor as well as an interesting complexity in both
the aromas and flavors.
The fruit for the Brut Crémant d’Alsace is all hand picked
and the whole grapes are pressed under pressure and then only
the best juice is used. The mousse (bubbles) is produced in
the traditional Champagne method and kept for 2 years in the
cellar before disgorgement and preparation for sale.
The Crémant of Domaine Baur is a classic example of this Alsatian
sparkling wine. This Crémant has an expressive bouquet of peach
and pear and has lots of medium-sized bubbles, a crisp acidity
and a mouthful of fruit on the palate. Made from Pinot Blanc
Auxerrois 40%, Pinot Blanc 40% and Chardonnay 20 % rounding
out the blend.
It is an excellent aperitif and a good companion to light hors
d’oeuvres, foods with flair of exotic spices, and picnic fare.
