This
is a small, family-owned property located in the foothills of
the Vosges Mountains, just east of Colmar in the little burg
of Katzenthal. They produce wine from Riesling, Tokay Pinot
Gris and Gewurztraminer grapes on their terroir of granite-based
soils. The wines in general are crisp, clean, fruity and fragrant,
and very well balanced with slightly lower alcohol levels (12-13%)
than their more southerly neighbors. As most Alsatian vignerons,
they produce a number of Grand Cru wines. The Bernhards produce
theirs from the Wineck Schlossberg and Mambourg appellations.
The nose is light and clean with notes of apples and pears.
This lightness belies the rich fruit impressions in the mouth
from the beginning through the mid-palate, which are well balanced
with a crisp acidity. The residual sugar is just a bit higher
in the Pinot Gris than in the Riesling making this wine a wonderful
aperitif or a good match with hors d'oeuvres. |
