This
is a small, family-owned property located in the foothills of
the Vosges Mountains, just east of Colmar in the little burg
of Katzenthal. They produce wine from Riesling, Tokay Pinot
Gris and Gewurztraminer grapes on their terroir of granite-based
soils. The wines in general are crisp, clean, fruity and fragrant,
and very well balanced with slightly lower alcohol levels (12-13%)
than their more southerly neighbors. As most Alsatian vignerons,
they produce a number of Grand Cru wines. The Bernhards produce
theirs from the Wineck Schlossberg and Mambourg appellations.
This Riesling is a classic Alsatian wine. It is dry and crisp
and yet has a fine and refined fruit bouquet that follows cleanly
through the mid-palate. Along with the fruit one finds a mineral
note that further adds to the complexity. This is an excellent
accompaniment to cold-cuts and prepared meats and sausages,
as well as a pleasant aperitif. |
