The
village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is situated in the center of
the famous Côtes de Blancs where the wines produced
from chardonnay are entitled to Grand Cru status and known
as blanc de blancs or white wine from white grapes. Le Mesnil
(as it is referred to by the locals) is one of the best-known
villages in the Côtes des Blancs and is host to a number
of great champagne producers, one of whom is Bernard Launois.
Bernard Launois is one of a number of generations of Launois
producing great wines from their own vineyards and, as many
of the better small champagne houses, a member of the "grower-producer"
club meaning that the producer owns the vineyards, produces
the still wines and then the champagnes on their own property.
Thus the champagne from Launois Père & Fils (father
& sons) is a unique wine showing the characteristics of
the terroir of their vineyards as well as the style of the
house.
Bernard
Launois calls this Grand Cru bottling his Cuvée Réservée.
The champagne is 100% chardonnay and is kept in the cellar
for three years following the secondary fermentation. This
extended ageing on the lees of the yeast gives the wine
its complexity and nuttiness and provides a rich balance
with the fruit and acidity coming from the chardonnay grape.
As
most of the chardonnay-based champagnes from this region,
the still wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation
thus preserving the freshness of the fruit and giving the
wine some ageing potential in the bottle.
This
richly flavored blanc de blancs is an excellent aperitif
and an excellent accompaniment to light hors d'oeuvres.
It also goes well with seafood, shellfish lobster and crab
as well as white meats and lightly seasoned poultry.
