With
all the activity in the Haut-Médoc and the famous communes,
many wines of the Médoc, the northeastern part of the
Left Bank peninsula, are consigned to second offerings by negociant
houses and more often than not considered as less than interesting.
Not so! There are many small properties which produce a wine
of character and depth which prove to be exceptional values.
Christine Courrian, the proprietor and wine maker is one of those producers. Her approach to making wine is serious and the quality of her wine is ample testament to that. On her 12 hectare property of clay and limestone, she raises Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot from vines with an average age of 30 years. Harvest is all done by hand followed by a long (30 days) fermentation and 15 months in French oak barrels. The result is wonderful.
The wine is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (35%) and Petit Verdot (5%). She is a big fan of Petit Verdot and will bottle some separately in a good vintage. She will even pour you some if you ask.
This is the kind of vigneron I love to work with and a wine that is a joy to present to the market.
