The
wines of Pomerol are world-reknowned for their quality, flavor
and character thanks to the unique clay soils of the appellation
and to the Merlot grape which does so well there. However, due
to the small size of Pomerol, and the demand for its wines,
the price of these wines has far exceeded their quality.
Enter Lalande-de-Pomerol. Significantly larger in size, this appellation
has soils similar to its small southern neighbor, and also uses predominantly
Merlot in its wines. This means that a good viticulteur and winemaker can
produce an excellent product that both represents the terroir of the area
and a good wine value. Monsieur Rémy Rousselot is such an producer
and he does an exceptional job in his Domaine Pont de Guestres.
Made entirely of Merlot, this wine offers ripe and rich forward fruit that
is simply luscious. The flavors are supported by a soft but solid tannic
backbone that provides structure without a harsh finish. Round and full
on the palatte, the wine shows great balance from the nose through to the
finish. This is a limited production of which I have the good fortune to
import, mainly because I import Rémy's Fronsac wine (Les Roches de
Ferrand). I am pleased to offer this wine to the Chicago market and feel
that it offers one of the best Merlot wines in its price range.photos
