Château Haut-Pontet

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
1998

Located within sight of the Medieval city of St. Emilion, this outstanding property of the limestone and clay plateau of St. Emilion produces wines in a classic and rich style, a style that has given this region its world-famous reputation. Nestled among many of the great properties of St. Emilion, the terroir and attention to detail has elevated the quality of this wine to that of its better known (and more expensive) neighbors.

After tasting this wine, I realized why it received a Gold Medal at the 1998 Region of Acquitaine Judging. In fact, this wine has earned a gold medal at the Paris Fair for the 1995 vintage, and a silver medal at the same fair for their 1994 vintage.

Rich with Merlot fruit laced around a structure of Cabernet Franc, and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is well balanced and a classic example of a well-made St. Emilion Grand Cru at an equally attractive price.

Smooth enough to drink by itself, this wine was really vinified to be served with food such as characteristic of the region; lamb, duck, poultry and other well seasoned preparations. The soft fruit of the wine also lends it to more gentle preparations using fruit sauces or white wine (sweet or dry) reductions.
