Sancerre is one of a number of appellations in the upper Loire
river valley that produce some of the best Sauvignon Blanc wines
in the world. A cool climate and chalky limestone soils
yield wines that are full-flavored and distinctive, from grapes
that are just ripe enough to offer an excellent balance of fruit
and acidity. Known for their elegant richness, these wines
are superb at the table or equally suited as an aperitif.
Vigne du Larrey is one of a series of single vineyard Sancerre
wines produced by the Gitton family. The soil of the Vigne du
Larrey vineyard is based on limestone and clay and is rich in
iron. The sediment layer, now bent at an angle of over 30°
(this is one steep slope!), is rich in ammonite fossils, which
are ancient swimming shellfish, not unlike the current day Nautilus.
The nose is captivating with complex perfumes, fresh fruit
aromas, and nuances of minerals. Smooth and silky impressions
follow through on the palate, which linger long into the finish
giving almost the impression of a fine Bourgogne.
An elegant, flavorful and powerful wine that can be served with
an enormous variety of dishes such as oysters, clams, shellfish,
grilled fish or lighter fish served with or without full-flavored
sauces, or with white meats such as chicken or pork, or other
vegetable dishes where lighter but challenging flavors are prominent.
