Sancerre is one of a number of appellations in the upper
Loire river valley that produce some of the best Sauvignon
Blanc wines in the world. A cool climate and chalky limestone
soils yield wines that are full-flavored and distinctive,
from grapes that are just ripe enough to offer an excellent
balance of fruit and acidity. Known for their elegant richness,
these wines are superb at the table or equally suited as an
aperitif.
Galinot is one of a
series of single vineyard Sancerre wines produced by the Gitton family. The
Galinot vineyard is based on flint and is only about 2 acres. It faces mostly
east and rests at an altitude of about 750 ft. With an average slope of about
25°, this gives a new view on hillside vineyard plantings.
The golden hue of the
wine, more typical of a great Bourgogne white, hints that this is no typical
Sancerre.
The nose is captivating
blended perfumes of honey, wax and spiced pears. The body of the wine is
extraordinary and the flavors linger long into the finish giving almost the
impression of a fine Bourgogne.
An elegant, flavorful
and powerful wine that calls for equally flavored dishes such as grilled fish
of lobster, salmon fillet, or with white meats such as chicken or pork cooked
with butter or herbed flavored sauces or smothered with vegetables.
There is only about 7000 bottles of Galinot made in a vintage.
