Picpoul (or Piquepoul) is an ancient Languedoc grape variety whose name means “lipstinger” in the Midi referring the high acid content of the grape must, characteristic of this variety. Although gris and noir versions of this grape exist, it is the white that is most commonly found in the vineyards. Picpoul de Pinet is a named “Cru” in the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation that produces wine made only from the Picpoul Blanc grape, and one of the few wines from this region labeled by varietal.
The Picpoul de Pinet Cru is located just off the coast of the Mediterranean and a short distance from Montpelier, one of the largest cities in the Languedoc. Although known for the warm climate and intense sunlight, the proximity of Picpoul de Pinet to the sea tempers the local microclimate allowing the grapes to retain their freshness and acidity.
Jean-Louis Fougeray and his family, actually based in Marsannay in the more northerly Bourgogne region, own property in the Picpoul de Pinet Cru and produce this delicious and very affordable white wine.
The wine is a pale golden in color and the nose is redolent of floral and tropical fruit aromas. It is almost reminiscent of the sea airs and fragrances as one approaches the coast.
It is a mouth-filling white wine with delicate layers of flavors and a good fruit-acidity balance, with hints of citrus rind on the finish.
Picpoul de Pinet makes a good companion to shellfish, either raw or cooked, or other white-fleshed fish. The crispness of the fruit also lends itself to more spiced Asian cuisine.
Enjoy this delicious wine with meals or just by itself.
