The
white wine from the Graves region of Bordeaux is among the finest
and celebrated dry white wines produced in the entire region.
Produced from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion, Graves white wines
often show a flinty component underlying the fruit and other
flavors giving added complexity to an already attractive wine.
This flintiness should come as no surprise as the name "Graves"
means small stones and pebbles. The soil in Graves is riddled
with these as a result of the washouts and moraines left over
from the glaciers of the Pyrénées Mountains during
the last Ice Age.
Clos La Maurasse is no exception and is an excellent example of these wines at a very reasonable price. The cépage of Clos La Maurasse Graves white is 60% Semillion and 40% Sauvignon Blanc. The wine is cool fermented in stainless steel for at least 30 days, and then finished and bottled soon thereafter to keep its freshness and aroma.
An elegant dry white wine with lots of flavor, fruit and finesse, it makes a good companion with lighter meats and cheeses (great with fresh or herbed goat cheese) but is a marvelous partner with shellfish, fish and other "fruits of the sea".
