The Depeyre family in the town of Visan produces this red wine from the Southern
Rhône river valley.
The village of Visan is north of the Vaucluse in the Enclave des Papes and
the "Clos" occupies some of the best vineyard land in Visan that is
chalky and stony clay. Their Côtes du Rhone-Villages is produced
with grapes from this south-facing vineyard with vines ranging from 25 to 60
years of age.
This wine is produced using mostly Grenache (80%), blended with Syrah (10%),
Carignan (7%), Cinsault (4%) and 1% Mourvedre. Whole grape
cluster maceration provides a rich and red raspberry fruit
flavor and the subsequent fermentation of 8-10 days is temperature
controlled to preserve the freshness of the fruit.
After fermentation, the wine is racked into underground concrete
tanks and aged for a full year before transfer to oak barrels
(225L) for an additional six months of ageing.
An elegant yet powerful wine, this classic and full-bodied
example of Southern Rhône wines shows exceptional balance
and ripe red cherry and raspberry fruit. The spiciness from
the Grenache and the wild touch from the Syrah, along with
the light mineral character, further add to the interest and
complexity of the wine. Quite simply, this is a delicious
glass of wine. And, this wine will improve over the next 5
years.
This is a great accompaniment to meats, roasted and grilled,
as well as game, poultry, and fowl.
